Rehabilitative Night Jog in Bare Feet

Dec. 6, 2021

I hit a nearby park for a jog after dinner. It was pitch black, and not a single soul could be seen. I ran 5 K on the grass and woodchips. I ran with shoes on. The pace was easy, 'cause I'm still on recovery phase, not completely recovered.

After running about  3 K I started regretting that I had the shoes on. My toe started hurting a little. I coped with the discomfort for another 2 K, but then when I reached 5 K, I made a short stop to take off my shoes and socks all together, and put them in the bush so that no one would steal them, though it's highly unlikely that anyone would steal a stranger's worn-out shoes with a crumpled sock in each...

Once barefooted, I felt so much better. Though I knew I shouldn't, I found myself naturally picking up the pace a little, which is revealed in the fastest time in the 6th lap.

Funny, while I was running for my 3rd K, I felt heavy and didn't think I would make any longer than 5 K. I thought, "Five is enough for the day." But then, once the shoes were taken off, I felt like a new man. I felt re-born. I felt renewed motivation well up from within. I'm like, "Where the heck is all this energy coming from?"

Before I knew, I had run for an hour to cover 11 K. Phew! It was a blast!

Midnight Barefoot Jog

Jul. 13, 2021

15.5 K: 1:26:32

Ran a different route from yesterday for a change. Stopped by a friend's house to drop off some Japanese ginger. I collected a whole bunch on the previous night. Ran longer than usual to test my fitness. At an easy pace, an extra 5 K didn't feel that much. Hope to run this distance more often to make a smooth transition to running a longer distance more frequently.

Rainy Midnight 10 K Build-Up in Bare Feet

Jun. 28, 2021

What a productive day! I slept late to catch up on sleep this morning, did some house chores like drying my futon in the sun and doing the vacuuming, took care of the backyard, pruning some citrus trees and moving some shiso plants from a shady area to a more sunny space, and so on.

Later in the afternoon, I went out for a short motorbike ride out in the rural area of the city to look for some edible wild plants. Collected some Japanese ginger buds, but wasn't able to find 'tade' or a water pepper. In fact, found something that kind of resembled the description of the plant in a book, but wasn't sure if that was what it was. But I remember where I saw it, so maybe I will go there again to pick some up and bring it back home to test-taste it.

After dinner, I wrote a syllabus for three lessons and made three handouts, which I shared with my co-workers for a double-check.

After having done everything, or perhaps more than I had wanted to do, I finally did what I hadn't been able to do due to an extremely hectic schedule this past week: running.

By the time I changed into my running gear, it had started raining, but it didn't stop me, because I always have a fairly positive feeling about rains, because some of my best races took place on rainy days, with one even on a little stormy day!

I ran an out & return 10 K course with one hell of a giant downhill and upward incline. Cruised along the first half, and picked up pace in the second half, making it a solid 10 K build-up. I'm happy with my final surge, which was fairly strong.

Late Night Barefoot Jog

Jun. 7, 2021

11.4 K: 1:03:29

I listened to two lectures while jogging. It was in preparation for two corporate seminars scheduled for tomorrow. Both lectures are by world-renowned motivational speaker Brian Tracy. One is about courage in making positive changes in life. The other is about how to become a great conversationalist.

As for the first topic, I find two things interesting. One is that the biggest obstacle that stops people from making a new action is fear, but fear is not always a bad thing. He cites two examples to illustrate it. One is playing golf in lightning. The other is swimming with sharks. What good examples to show the original purpose of fear! It's self protection. However, Brian goes on to say that this means of self-protection, when carried to the extreme, can be a shackle. It ends up keeping you in your comfort zone. Interestingly, Brian uses an interesting metaphor of locking oneself in the prison of comfort zone. Again, what a good way to show how it is NOT good stay in one's comfort zone.

With respect to the second topic, he gives us three practical ways to become a good conversationalist. One is to pause before responding. The second is question for clarification. The third is paraphrasing another person's words in your own words. I'd like to follow on them all on some other occasion as I have a super early start tomorrow, and therefore must hit the bed now. Till then.

10 K Barefoot Recovery Run

About 24 hours after running 33.25 K I enjoyed having a recovery run for an hour in bare feet in a nearby park. It was crowded with people of all ages. There were quite a few teenagers sitting and talking in groups in the sun. They are probably new graduates from a local junior high school. There were an equally large number of elderly people in the park. They were walking on a 500-M loop. I ran the same loop 20 times to cover 10 K.

It's been a while since I last ran without shoes. It always feels great to feel the grass directly on your sole.

An easy run for an hour alleviated stiffness in the legs. Strong sunshine lifted my spirit.

I had lost a substantial amount of subcutaneous fat from the 30 plus K run yesterday. Running with less fat carried in your body is a pleasant experience. I want to stay lean like I do now. It seems to be an important part of going for a better time in a race. Aiming for a higher self seems to me to be all about not carrying anything that's not needed when you run, and also about only having what's truly essential. No more muscle training that doesn't make sense in terms of long distance running. Not too much carbo loading when you already have excessive fat around your waist. I'll take diet and workout seriously so that next time I'm invited by the multiple sub-3 runner to accompany her, I can run farther and faster.

Post-Dinner Barefoot Run

Dec. 9, 2020

Got out for a second barefoot run for the night. The ball of the left foot was slightly in dull pain. It was probably from the training on the previous night. I went easy to avoid injury.

The sole felt a little sore. I regretted not wearing shoes. But it was too late. I was already well into 1 K when I realized that.

When you feel discomfort while running, all you can do is "cope with" it. It's a very important part of daily training, because that's what it's all about--"deal with it" when something unexpected happens during a race.

To my delight, though, the discomfort in the sole increasingly felt manageable as I went on. I was pleasantly surprised by the human ability to adapt to the environment to withstand pain.

I made a body weight training stop at the Minamisizu Central Park near Minamishizu Elementary School. I trained my upper body for a little less than ten minutes. It was quick, but highly intensive. It hit lats, arms, core and chest.

A warm shower after coming home from the run was heavenly. While taking a shower, I washed two pairs of my running shows which I almost never wear when running. They are mostly for urban use.

Tomorrow after a bit event is over, I want to put myself to a test. I am going to do a 10 K tempo run. At my previous attempt I was able to run under the target only in the last of four laps. Tomorrow night I will aim for 2 laps under the target. Anything better than that is a bonus.

Hit the nearby park to run on the lawn in bare feet shortly after the sunset. It was mostly deserted but several locals were spotted here and there. A couple of young boys were playing soccer, and a handful of elderlies were talking a walk. A woman, who wasn't present when I got there, was seen running the oval walking path inside the park. We got close to each other a few times while I shunted back and forth across the park. The walking path is not very comfortable to run on, because it's either bare soil or covered with wood chips. I sometimes intentionally run it to toughen my soles. But today is not the day. My soles were a little sore from the barefoot run on the previous night. Today I needed to let them recover.

The lawn felt so cold already, and my feet started feeling numb after running for several minutes. It felt as if my feel were cut off from the ankle, and I was landing on the soil directly on the cutting edge of the bottom of the shin.

A long warm bath felt like seventh heaven after the run.

My next mission is to recharge my bodies batteries and fuel myself for another run late at night. I'm going to have angler-fish hot pot tonight. Rich in collagen and highly nutritious.

I ran in bare feet after a long time. It felt cold on the lawn and hurt a little also at first. But soon both soles got numb to both the cold and the pain.

It started raining 3 K into the run. I decided to call it a day after running another K.

While running my 4th K I felt a slight discomfort in my left kidney. It was a funny feeling. I hardly ever feel any discomfort in my kidneys. I wanted to see what's going to happen if I continued to run. After running 4 K, I get off the lawn and hit the road. I aimed to run an out and return 6 K course rich in undulation. It's mostly straight and the road condition is good most of the way. I ran comfortably. In no time I found myself having completely forgotten about the kidney problem.

While taking a shower after coming home from the training, I felt a sharp pain in my right heel. I took a close look to find a black dot in the skin. After the shower I sat on the floor and took an even closer look. A black piece of obsidian-like chip of stone was stuck in the horny layer. I picked it with a pair of tweezer. It easily came out. After that there was no pain.

I hope to jog for an hour or so on Thursday. And hopefully on Friday or Saturday night I will have a tempo run.

9.9 K Barefoot Jog & Body Weight Upper Body Training

I completed the first draft of a project whose deadline is next Monday. It will be checked by the boss, and needs revising after that. But nonetheless I am a little ahead of schedule. To celebrate the early completion I went out for a short barefoot jog.

The road was wet from the rain in the daytime and felt chilly on the sole, but after running for a few minutes, both of the soles got numb to it.

I did some body weight exercise in the park at the halfway point of the out and return course. I hit my upper body using the monkey bars and did some single-hand push-ups to hit the chest and core.

I took a slightly different route to the park tonight. The road surface is a little smoother on the new route, but that adds to a little more distance, 200 meters or so. The slope is less steep than in the previous route.

I ran a 2.5 K loop after running the out and return course to cover 9.9 K. The sole feels just a little bit sore, but I didn't get any blister mainly because the pace wasn't so fast. I checked my form carefully when climbing a hill. I tend to slouch when I get tired. I kept that in check, and push my belly forward and kept my torso upright. I also tried not to hop much, because that exhausts more energy than you should in your calves. In a short run, it doesn't cause much trouble, but in a marathon you end up paying a huge price in the last quarter of the race.

It's been 4 days since I ran last. In the previous training there was a brief body weight muscle training session after the first and third 3.5 K. Tonight I wanted to keep on running without any intermittent disruptions.

I started off slowly. The legs felt heavy and breathing hard. I felt bad about not being able to run for the last few days due to preparation for an important corporate seminar.

But once I hit the first 3.5 K the initial heaviness of legs was mysteriously gone. I kept on going almost in a metronomic tempo.

In the last 3.5 K I increased the pace to cover it under 17 minutes. More than half of this out and return course has poorly-maintained road surface, which prevents me from picking up the pace, but where the road surface was smooth, I surged like I do in a race, which resulted in one big blister in the right sole! But that's OK. It's one of those things. It happens all the time. It'll be all right in a few days, and the sole will have been toughened by then.

11 K Barefoot Run

 Nov. 4, 2020

Ran 5 K on the lawn and 6 K on the pavement to cover 11 K in a little less than an hour. Increasingly getting cold for a barefoot run, but that's not going to be a big problem, because at a certain point my feet become numb and stop feeling anything.

Español, Bike Ride, & Run

April 5, 2020
Studied Spanish more than 6 hours on Duolingo. Finally reached the top in the Gold League past midnight. Spanish is an unbelievably fun language to learn. Grammar is simple, and sounds are fun to pronounce. I can't believe I didn't learn it sooner.

Went for a short bike ride at night out to Narita. Everything was closed or closed earlier. It was cold at night. I regretted I didn't had my pair of Temres gloves on. They are the best damn gloves to resist cold winds and even rains.

April 6, 2020
Went to the Minato City Hall in Akasaka to get a copy of my family register in the afternoon. Went there by bike. Parked it near Metro Akasakamitsuke Station, and walked up a hill toward Aoyama Icchome. City Hall is on the left a 5-minute walk from the parking lot. A clerk said there's parking on the basement floor of the building and that it's free! Should've checked it in advance. Oh, well...

Got a picture taken for my passport at Bic Camera, and headed for 1000 City in Chiba where the passport bureau is. Got there shortly before the office closed. Officers were helpful, and I completed all my application procedures in less than 20 minutes. The bureau was far from crowded. I was one of several people there were. My passport is going to be ready in a week. I am supposed to pick it up at a passport office in Funabashi which is between my home and office. It's easy access.

Ran before dinner after coming home. Hit the nearby park to do some barefoot run. School kids in uniform were playing soccer. They were let out early due to the coronavirus thing. They are supposed to distance themselves from each other, but three kids were facing each other close, lying on the grass and chatting with each other as they played games on their smartphones.

Jogged for 20 minutes and did a 200-M sprint three times and got burned out.

Had butterbur(ふき=fuki)for dinner. Madam Fumiko collected heaps from the backyard. It was delicious.

Negishi Forest Park (根岸森林公園)

Feb. 11, 2020

Five days till the race. I'm in the tapering stage. It's National Foundation Day today. It's a national holiday. I have a day off.

I rode my bike in tandem with my bilingual companion to the Red Brick Warehouse in Yokohama. She and I had buffet lunch at Fisherman's Market operated by Kirin

After lunch we went to Negishi Forest Park. They charge you 300 yen for parking a car for every two hours, but there is no charge for motorcycles.

It was packed with families with kids and people with dogs. Some were playing catch. Others were kicking a soccer ball around. Yet others were putting their legs up and relaxing. Some even put up their tent here and there. Looks like it's allowed.

I took off my boots and ran barefooted. It felt awesome.

Negishi Forest Park is hilly. I ran up some hills several times. My heart rates were immediately raised, the heart pounding like a drum.

The sky was cloudless. The winds were a bit chilly, but the sun was strong, and it kept me warm enough even with my sweater off after ten minutes of jogging and hill sprints.

After leaving the park, I dropped my bilingual companion off at JR Negishi Station, and headed back home, driving along the Yokohane Line of the Metropolitan Expressway, and later into the Wangan Line.

At night I jogged 10 K in aqua shoes.

Midnight Barefoot Run

Dec. 23, 2019
7.7 K: 42:36.13

It's been a while since I ran last. I've been busy with corporate seminars, and had no choice but give priority to them. I was then going to do some quality training on the weekend, but a sudden seizure hit my stomach on early Sunday morning, and I had to stay in bed almost all day. It's quite unusual of me. I've experienced quite a few psychosomatic symptoms when I was under extreme pressure, but I was always aware that they were psychologically induced, and they would be gone soon once I was aware of it.  But this stomachache was totally unexpected, and wouldn't go away soon. It was definitely largely caused by a highly stressful work schedule, but I believed my mindbody would cope with it. It didn't. I suspect my sympathetic nervous system was too dominant, trying to cope with the busy schedule while the parasympathetic was subdued, which negatively affected my digestive system, thus resulting in the stomachache.

The pain's gone, and I felt strong enough for a jog, so I hit the road in bare feet. It felt good. In five days I'm scheduled to go for a long run in Central Tokyo with several friends of mine. It's going to be fun. I will run again on Friday night when two seven-hour seminars are over.

Barefoot Jog

Dec.17, 2019
8.64 K: 49:29.41

I jogged in bare feet tonight. It was cold, but there was little wind, so it was comfortable to run.

I ran the course above. It's rich in undulation, and most of it offers good road condition. Some parts have a rather deteriorated surface, and I had to slow down significantly.

I've had run barefooted less often over the last couple of months, so my soles have softened a bit. I need to run without shoes more often to toughen them up, so that I will be strong enough by April to run the fastest barefoot marathon in the Kasumigaura Marathon 2020.

Pre-5-hour Seminar 30-Minute Barefoot Run

Aug. 17, 2019
5 K: 27:19.05

Total 6 K: 30:59.69

Today I have the last of five 5-hour seminars held over a period of five days. It starts at 10:30 a.m.

So that I can make a good start, I hit the road to get my heart pumping and blood running.

I ran 6 K in bare feet. I ran a hilly shuttle course to get ready for the first official race of my 2019-2020 race season. It's held in September. It has an altitude difference of over 300 M between the start and finish point.

In the first half with the sun on my back, and in the second with it on my face, I had such a refreshing session.

To apply the advice by late Yoshio Koide who trained Sydney Olympics women's marathon gold medalist Ms. Naoko Takahashi, I injected the pace significantly in the last 1 K to run it in 3:40.64. I was a bit surprised how fast I ran, because I didn't feel like I was running that fast, which is a good sign.  A pace that used to be impossible to sustain for a kilometer has become not entirely unmanageable. I feel I'm getting stronger.

Jogged a hilly course in bare feet for a little more than an hour to cover 11. 5 K. Couldn't pick up pace as I did some body weight muscle training a few hours prior to the run and felt a bit exhausted. Weighed 61 kg after the run. Will slowly lose weight, hopefully below 60 kg. It's considered a key factor in renewing my PR both for 10 K and full marathon.

10.5 K Barefoot Run

June 17, 2019
10.5 K

Twelve hours after the park workout earlier this morning, I was in a mood to run a decent distance at a steady pace, so I hit the road in bare feet, and ran the course below.

The road was still a bit warm from the daytime heat, and it felt pleasant on the bare feet.

The legs felt heavy from lactic acid produced in some fast runs in the morning. But I'm hoping that the session tonight, which is conducted at a relatively comfortable pace, will help quicken the recovery process by promoting blood circulation and consequently elimination of metabolic wastes.

13.8 K Build Up in Bare Feet

 May 1, 2019
13.8 K: 1:14:47

Six days have passed since that majestic victory by Eliud Kipchoge in London Marathon 2019. His overwhelming power rubbed off on me, I've been fidgety ever since, dreaming of someday running strongly like him...

Quite contrary to my ambition, though, when I got up this morning, I was a little sore from high intensity workout I had done on the previous morning. I was hungry also. I almost had a quick bite of banana or apple. But then I remembered the respectable marathon maestro and his teammates always have breakfast after their morning run. I threw myself into my running gear, and hit the road.

It's been a while since I ran last. I was afraid I had lost some of my fitness. But the affect was minimum. I was afraid my soles had gotten softer because they were inside wet boots for so many hours during rainy-day bike rides. But they were still strong enough to withstand the roughness of the initial section of the course today.

A couple of kilometers of warm up run got my body's key joints aligned nicely. Once I felt reasonably warmed up, I enjoyed changing pace every now and then. I increased both cadence and pace when going up an upward incline and slowed down to recoup on flats.

Around the 6 K mark there is a park. I had always thought there was no tap water available. There was none visible from the street I ran. But I found out today that I was wrong. There was. It's only that I took a better look across the park, and I spotted one. The park will be my first aid station from now on when I train on this course...

Past the park I took a left turn into a large loop around Yukarigaoka's residential district developed by general contractor Yamaman Corporation. At another park along the loop I took a right turn into the residential area, cutting across it toward north. A brief run across that neighborhood took me the northern tip of the loop. I then took a right again back into the loop, and from there continued down the road to the south until I hit Route 296, where the remaining distance is around 3 K.

I injected the pace, applying the advice by late Yoshio Koide who passed away at the end of last month. He's known as the coach of Naoko Takahashi who brought the first Olympic gold medal to Japan in the history of women's track and field. In his book he recommends trying to push the pace toward the end of every practice run.

To my surprise, pace increase was not too hard to handle. I kept the faster pace with ease. Occasional stops at traffic lights and a railroad crossing were frustrating. But even without them I would have been able to go on without running out of gas.

I enjoyed running at a pace a lot faster than that at the time of start. I was constantly thinking about breakfast when I took off. But by the time I was back home, I found myself completely having forgotten about it. A positive feeling associated with a good morning run overshadowed the basic survival need.

But when I took a warm pleasant shower, all of a sudden I was hit with a hunger attack. I quickly fixed a simple breakfast with steamed brown rice, beaten raw egg, and fermented soy beans, and enjoyed it to my heart's content. Though the meal was simple, I tasted a lot more delicious than breakfast I have with no exercise done before it.

Double Training: 4.1 K Barefoot Run + 10.5 K Barefoot Run

April 25, 2019
<Morning>
4.1 K: 22:57.25
<Midnight>
10.5 K: 1:04:05
Total 14.6 K: 1:27:02.25

I woke up at 8. But I couldn't climb out of futon until 9. I felt a bit sore and not completely recovered from the fast 3 K run on the previous night. I almost skipped my morning exercise. But I didn't want to break the habit. So I settled for workout that's less challenging than tire throws.

When it was over, I was reasonably warmed up, and was in a mood to run. But my legs were heavier than usual. So I only ran a little more than 20 minutes to cover around 4 K and got back home.\

At night I ran the 10.5 K course below and complete the double training for the day to cover a total of 14.6 K for the day.

Tomorrow I'm not running in the morning, mainly because I want to go to work early to get some work done that's both important and urgent. But I hope to run at night. I may run a new course just to keep me motivated.
