10 K Barefoot Jog on Grass / 10㌔裸足走

Aug. 21, 2022

I completed another pain-free barefoot jog on grass. It is part of my on-going rehabilitative effort to someday run a marathon in bare feet again. Today I comfortably covered 10 K in about one hour. I am happy.

I had been sore from body weight muscle training that I had done 3 days before. The soreness almost receded by this late afternoon. So after prepping for a couple of lessons that I'm scheduled to teach next week, I hit a nearby park for a run.

It was past 5:00 p.m. when I got to the park. It was busy with locals, some taking a walk, others practicing soccer, and yet others playing with hand-made stings hanging on branches of cherry trees.

I started off without pre-determining how far I would go. I ran at an easy pace. Much slower than usual.

I listened, while running, to a few different lectures all by biological anthropologist, Helen Fisher. She is one of a number of academics that I like. She discovered biological proof for different social styles. One thing that I learned from her is that people are sometimes hard to deal with not because they intend to give you a hard time (though it is possible that in some case they do), but because that's who they are. She makes to become more open-minded to people whose personality types are largely different from mine, which is a good thing, because I can avoid unnecessary friction with others.

Anyhow, back to talking about running, because I ran at such an easy pace, I still felt full of energy after running 8 K, so I decided to increase the pace and finish fast at the end, which I did. I was expecting a 1:02-ish finish. But the time was well under 1:01. But time is not so important at this stage of rehab. Distance. That's more important. I want to be used to running longer distances. But I'm in no hurry. What took long to lose will take long to recover. I'm going to go slow.

Midnight 10.6 K Barefoot Jog

Apr. 11, 2021

10.6 K: 57:30.30

It was a very fulfilling Sunday. It started with a very healthy home-made breakfast of grilled veggies. After learning Spanish for about an hour after breakfast, I went for a motorbike ride to a farm stand in Yatomi, Sakura City. I bought a decent length of 'jinenjo' yam, several small round pieces of rice cake with wild chrysanthemum mixed in, a boundle of 'fuki' plant, and sweet potatoes.

I drove on to a McDonald's in Togane City, and relaxed for a couple of hours.

On my way home I saw a bamboo forest and found two small bamboo shoots. I cooked both as soon as I got home, because I wanted to eat them while they were fresh. They were exquisite.

After dinner I had a mental rehearsal for a corporate seminar tomorrow. Once it was done, I finally felt completely relaxed, and found myself in a mood for a run.

It was a bit chilly for early April, but I got out in bare feet and ran for about an hour.  My body felt a bit heavy at first as I had only run a short distance on and off over the last couple of weeks. But about half an hour in I found my rhythm and settled into pace

I could have gone for another few kilometers, but I didn't, because calling it a day before it becomes painful is a good way to stay motivated.

Midnight Barefoot Jog in the Rain

Jan. 7, 2019
10.5 K: 58:41.87

Two days after I did high intensity cardio workout, I ached all over. I could have just relaxed and waited until pain went away, but I chose to go for a barefoot jog instead. It was raining, and roads were miserably cold, but I hit the road anyway.

As soon as I started running, I regretted that I ran, because my soles felt miserably painful on the icy road. But I decided to go on as far as I could withstand the pain.

Several minutes into the ran, the pain subsided slightly. The truth of the matter was that the soles got almost numb.

I kept on running, slowing down where the road condition deteriorated, and picked up the pace slightly where it improved.

With only a couple of kilometers remaining, the prospect of the approaching goal suddenly lifted my spirit, and I cranked up the pace, resulting in a small bloody blister on the left sole, but it's nothing to bother about.

A long warm shower felt like heaven. A barefoot run is never easy especially on a cold rainy night like today, but when it's completed, nothing matched the tremendous feeling of accomplishment brought about by it.

10 K Barefoot Run

Nov. 8, 2019
10.5 K: 57:27.00

I ran in bare feet for the first time in a long time. It felt good. I took care of a blister in my right sole, and that took awhile to heal. The treated area still looks slightly awkward, but that doesn't distract me from running comfortably.

Thanks to the interval training on the previous night, my legs felt light, and breathing was a lot easier than usual.

Tomorrow at night I will do a 6 K tempo run @ 4:05/K. The target is running it under 24:30. I'm thrilled to give it a try.
